ASPIC....The Word of the Day

If you're not familiar, prepare to have the chunks rise up in your throat...

According to Wikipedia, Aspic is a dish in which ingredients are set into gelatine made from a meat stock or consommé.  When cooled, stock made from meat congeals because of the natural gelatin found in the meat. The stock can be clarified with egg whites, and then filled and flavored just before the aspic sets. Almost any type of food can be set into aspics. Most common are meat pieces, fruits, or vegetables. Aspics are usually served on cold plates so that the gel will not melt before being eaten.  A meat jelly that includes cream is called a chaud-froid.

Now if this doesn't get you excited for Thanksgiving, I don't know what will!  The words CONGEAL and MEAT JELLY always work up my appetite.

For All You Grey's Fans...

So this season of Grey's Anatomy just leaves something to be desired.  The writing is a bit off-the-wall....like what's up with the interns operating on themselves?!?!  And I really don't get the whole concept of Denny coming back from the dead and then having sex with Izzie...WTF??? And Callie's quasi-lesbian affair with Dr. Haan???  What the hell is going on this season?  It's like the writers all sat around and dropped acid tabs and ripped beer bongs together!  This type of shizzit doesn't happen in the real-world and certainly not within the confines of a respectable hospital.  Yet, this is Hollywood and they could give 2 craps about the real-world, as long as ratings are good!  Check out full episodes here.

Top Chef, Season 5, Episode 2

The contestant chefs found themselves cooking in Tom Colicchio's famed NYC restaurant Craft, where they were tasked with cooking 'new-American' dishes to wow the judges.  I'm not really crazy about any of the contestants this year, with the exception maybe of the 2 Europeans (Fabio and Stefan)....they're arrogant as hell but at least they're somewhat good-looking and entertaining...

Anyways, none of the contestants really blew the judges away, and Ms. Jill was sent home, due to her awful attempt at an ostrich-egg quiche...ewww, sorry, just threw up a little....adios beeatch!

Fox's 24: Redemption 2-hour Event this Sunday Nov. 23 at 8pm - Watch It!

After an almost 2-year Hiatus, 24 returns to the Fox network this Sunday (allegedly due to Keifer Sutherland's questionable extracurricular activities).  Undoubtedly one of the best shows on television, I'm super excited about its return.  It appears this Sunday's episode will be a teaser and the official Season 7 premiere won't be until January.  For more info, check out the official 24 Website!

Recipe of the Day

Soup du Jour - Portuguese Kale Soup

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 lb chorizo sausage (fresh not dried)
• 8 cups chicken broth
• 1 large onion, roughly diced
• 4 large potatoes, cubed
• 1 bunch kale, stemmed washed & chopped (abt. 1 lb.)
• 1 1/2 cups ditalini
• 1 (15 ounce) can dark red kidney beans
• 4 garlic cloves - chopped
• White wine of your choice
• fresh ground black pepper
• Crushed Red Pepper
• Bay Leaf
• salt (optional)
• 
  

Directions

1. 1

   Remove casing from sausage and cut into smaller than bit sized pieces.

2. 2

   Heat oil in a heavy soup pot; saute the sausage, onion, and garlic just until the fat is rendered, about 3 to 5 minutes.

3. 3

   Drain sausage on paper towel (optional).

4. 4

   Add potatoes, spices, and broth to the sausage mixture.
   

5. 5

   Bring to boil and simmer 10 minutes.

6. 6

   Add kale, beans, wine, and pasta and simmer another 10 minutes until both are tender.

7. 7

   Taste for seasoning- depending on how spicy your sausage is, add salt and pepper to taste.

   Serve piping hot.

I made this soup last night and it was DELICIOUS!!!  Aside from the chorizo, it's a really healthy and hearty soup and great for leftovers - I definitely recommend it!

So David Cook's debut album hits stores today.  Personally, I'm a die-hard Archie fan, and Cook's music isn't really my cup of tea.  From the snippits I've listened to, it sounds quite 'Daughtry-esque.'  Despite this, I still think he's a talented young guy....although his MASSIVE forehead kind of bothers me...

Blueberry Mojito - Mmmmmmmmm

1.5 parts Lemon Rum 2.5 parts Lime Soda Garnish

Blueberries

Mint leaf

Prepare a tall glass add the Blueberries, next add the Mint leaf. Muddle together. Add Lemon Rum Then fill with ice. Add Lime Soda to the top of the glass. Garnish with mint leaf.

TV Show RUBY - Style Network

I LOVE LOVE LOVE me some Ruby!!!!

Ok, so the Style Network recently debuted its show Ruby, detailing one woman's inspirational weight-loss journey.  Ruby lives in Savannah GA, and just oozes southern charm and personality.  She's the type of person that you instantly fall in love with!  Ruby's struggled with her weight throughout her entire life, and her mounting health concerns make her realize that 'enough is enough'!  She's committed herself to a strict diet and excercise schedule, along with some counselling sessions to help resolve any deep-seeded issues.  

Anyone who's struggled with their weight or self-image can instantly relate to this show and Ruby's struggles!  It's addictingly inspirational and you find yourself cheering on Ruby, and wanting to be her friend!  Last night's episode brought back her ex-boyfriend, who had left her 6 years earlier because of her weight.  Despite the fact that he's crazy HOT, Ruby's in a different place in her life right now, and doesn't need this guy's BS when she's just starting to focus on herself and lose the weight!  She ended the episode saying 'for the first time in my life, I'm starting to fall in love with myself!'  (paraphrase)  YEY!

Let's all take a lesson from this show.  Love you Ruby!  Check it out Sundays at 8pm EST on the Style Network.

ABC's Brothers and Sisters

Personally one of my FAVORITE shows on television!!!

ABC's award-winning drama Brothers and Sisters graces our television sets every Sunday at 10pm.  The show details the crazy lives of the Walker clan, a modern family led by its matriarch Nora, played by the talented Sally Field.  The father William Walker had passed away prior to the show's start, and left his family with a slew of messes to clean up, including a struggling business and illegitimate children all over the place.  Aside from the mancandy in the show (Dave Annable, Matthew Rhys, Rob Lowe, Luke MacFarlane, and Balthazar Getty), there's more than enough drama, action, heartache and love to satisfy even the harshest of critics.  ABC even threw in it's token gay couple, played by Matthew Rhys and Luke MacFarlane, both quite delectable!  Just about everyone can relate on some level to this family.  If you haven't watched it, now's the time to start.  It's excellent....thoughts?

Top Chef Season 5 Premiere

New York, New York!!!

Well the emmy-winning cooking show Top Chef debuted last night in its 5th season. Set in New York this season, there is certainly no lack of inspiration for these foodies!  The contestants were split up into pairs of twos, and dueled head-to-head in a cookoff inspired by various neighborhoods in NYC.  Personally, I think some of the teams really blew and missed their opportunity to make a good first impression on the judges!  I'm loving Team Rainbow already, which is generically the 3 homos on the show.  Also, I think head chef Tom Colicchio is a hottie, in a bearish sort of way.  Padma just annoys the shizzit out of me!  Who the hell is she anyways, and how is she qualified to host this show?!?!  Anyways, thoughts?

Ok everyone, so this book has a special place in my heart.  I must admit, I'm a tad bit biased since it's authored by my wonderful sister and written about my mom who passed away.  However, it is a must read for everyone!  It is a story about my mother's battle with both alcoholism and breast cancer, and how it impacted our family's lives, and how it's shaped us into the people we are today.  Melinda's writing is simple and extremely powerful, and will bring tears to even the toughest of critics.  Anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one or the pains associated with addiction can easly relate and be moved by this book.  It's a quick read, so click here to order your copy today!

Proposition 8: Anti-Gay-Marriage Amendments

Sadly enough, anti-gay-marriage legislation was passed in 3 states last Tuesday, whilst the country was showing its progressive nature in electing its first African-American president.  Florida, Arizona, and most shockingly California added constitutional amendments banning gays' right to marry.  How is it that this nation is enlightened enough to elect a black president but can't afford gay couples the same rights and equalities at heterosexual couples?  Our country is clearly moving forward, but is not where it needs to be.  What are your thoughts?

I love it!  It's really weird and twisted, which I like.  It's also temporarily filling the void of Fox's '24' which premiers later this month, after almost a 2 year hiatus.

Dorky Discussion #1: David Archuleta's Debut Album

For all you Archies & Arch-Angels out there, what do you think of David's debut album?

B+  Personally, I love the guy.  I think he has one of the greatest voices of anyone to grace the stages of Idol, or any stage for that matter.  However, I think this first album didn't quite showcase him the way I was hoping.  Some of the tunes are catchy, but overall I just felt a little disappointed with how over 'poppy' and over-produced many of the tracks were.  I think David shines when it's just him (and perhaps a piano) singing power ballads, like Josh Grobin's WYSYLM or Imagine.  I was hoping for more tracks like this on the debut album.  Oh well, the producers are targeting a younger tweenier crowd.  Overall, not bad, but I'll be waiting for his Holiday or 'Monster Ballads' album.  Comments?
